Double Doutch Queen

Double Dutch Queen is consciously tripled in its existence as a nostalgic relic of childhood and play, a commemoration of Black geographic movement fueled by the potential of opportunity via foundry, and a symbolic marker of social and economic ascension. Resting on a low-raised bed of Alabama red clay soil, and hinting at its Southern migratory origins, it emerges from its earthly foundation as a curious metallic bloom. At once a hardened, braided rope used in the African-American jump rope game of double-dutch, also evokes a long plaited ponytail, with its barrette adornments signaling a young ancestral participant. Perhaps further, it suggests the creeping low stems of ground-covering plants, stretching beyond its submerged roots towards liberation.
